Researchers found that adopting five healthy lifestyle practices led to a significantly increased life expectancy even for those over 80 and particularly for those with chronic health conditions.

Factors affecting life expectancy include socioeconomic level, government policies such as subsidized healthcare access, and lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise. From 1988 to 1990, 49,021 people were surveyed in 45 locations in Japan as part of the JACC study, a large research effort involving nation-wide research. As the questionnaire included questions about diet, exercise, alcohol consumption, smoking status, sleep duration, and body mass index, the purpose was to find out which factors are associated with cancer and cardiovascular disease death.
